DIY Herbal Skincare Toners
1. Clove and Rice Toner for Large Pores
Ingredients:
- Whole Cloves: 5 – 7
- Water (Filtered or Distilled): 1 cup (240 ml)
- White Rice (not instant): 1/4 cup
Recipe:
- Prepare Clove Water: Boil 1 cup of water and add the cloves. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 – 10 minutes. Let it cool completely. Strain out the cloves and set the liquid aside.
- Prepare Rice Water: Rinse the 1/4 cup of rice once. Place the clean rice in a small bowl and pour 1/2 cup of the cooled Clove Water over it. Let the rice soak for 30 – 60 minutes.
- Combine: Gently stir the rice and clove water mixture, then strain the liquid (the rice toner) into a clean, airtight container. Discard the rice.
Benefit: Help reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, soothe skin, and provide mild tightening effects.
2. Clove and Turmeric Toner for Dark Spots
Ingredients:
- Whole Cloves: 5 – 7
- Water (Filtered or Distilled): 1 cup (240 ml)
- Turmeric Powder: 1/4 teaspoon (use a small amount to minimize staining)
Recipe
- Prepare Clove Water: Boil 1 cup of water and add the cloves. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 – 10 minutes. Let it cool completely. Strain out the cloves and set the liquid aside.
- Mix Toner: In a clean container, pour 1 cup of the cooled Clove Water.
- Incorporate Turmeric: Add the 1/4 teaspoon of Turmeric Powder to the clove water.
- Shake Well: Close the container and shake vigorously until the turmeric is fully dissolved or evenly suspended. Note: You will need to shake it before each use.
Benefit: To help brighten the skin, potentially reduce hyper pigmentation, and even out skin tone.
3. Clove and Coffee Toner for Wrinkles
Ingredients:
- Whole Cloves: 5 – 7
- Water (Filtered or Distilled): 1 cup (240 ml)
- Ground Coffee: 1 tablespoon
Recipe:
- Combine & Brew: Add the Cloves and Ground Coffee to the 1 cup of water.
- Simmer: Bring the mixture to a boil, then immediately reduce heat and simmer gently for 5 minutes.
- Cool & Strain: Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool completely. Strain the liquid thoroughly through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean, airtight container to remove all solid particles.
Benefit: To leverage the antioxidant and circulation-boosting properties of coffee to help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
4. Clove and Flaxseed Toner for Collagen Support
Ingredients:
- Whole Cloves: 5 – 7
- Whole Flaxseeds: 1 tablespoon
- Water (Filtered or Distilled): 1 cup (240 ml)
Recipe:
- Combine & Brew: Add the Cloves and Whole Flaxseeds to the 1 cup of water.
- Simmer for Gel: Bring the mixture to a boil, then immediately reduce heat and simmer gently for 5 – 7 minutes, stirring occasionally. The liquid should start to thicken slightly into a gel-like consistency (mucilage).
- Strain: Immediately remove from heat and strain the liquid while it is still warm into a clean, airtight container. Once it cools, it will thicken further, making it harder to strain. Discard the solids.
Benefit: To provide a mucilage-rich toner that offers hydration and a temporary tightening effect, supporting a plumped appearance.
Important Notes
- Storage: Store all toners in the refrigerator and use them within 7 – 10 days.
- Safety: Always perform a patch test on a small area of skin before applying to your entire face, as clove can be irritating for sensitive skin.
